Shoeing Smith Thomas Henry Sheridan
Thomas Henry Sheridan was born on 25 January 1886 at Dernaglush, near Belturbet, County Cavan, the second of seven children of farmer Thomas Sheridan and his wife Elizabeth (née Faulkner). Following the death of his father in April 1902 the family moved to nearby Corraharra, County Fermanagh. On 11 February 1907 Thomas married Eliza Jane Graham at the Church of Ireland Holy Trinity Church, Kinawley, County Fermanagh. The couple had three children over the next seven years. At the time of the 1911 Census Thomas was living at Corraharra with his wife and children and working as a gardener.
Sheridan enlisted in the North Irish Horse between 14 and 19 January 1915 (No.1405 – later Corps of Hussars No.71375). He trained at the regiment's Antrim reserve depot before embarking for France with a reinforcement draft on 7 September 1915. There he was posted to A or D Squadron.
In May 1916 A Squadron came together with D and E Squadrons to form the 1st North Irish Horse Regiment, serving as corps cavalry to VII, XIX, then V Corps until February-March 1918, when the regiment was dismounted and converted to a cyclist unit. This meant a 25 per cent reduction in the regiment's numbers, and it is likely that this was the time that Sheridan was transferred to the 8th (King's Royal Irish) Hussars. He was later posted to the 19th (Queen Alexandra’s Own Royal) Hussars, and the 3rd (King’s Own) Hussars, serving through 1919.
Following his discharge Sheridan returned to County Fermanagh. He died on 5 November 1971.
Sheridan's brother Walter Cooper Sheridan also served in the North Irish Horse during the war.
